http://www.cok.net Benjamin Chapman Compassion Over Killing (COK) is a nonprofit animal protection organization that is a national non-governmental organization.  This organization has been involved in multiple cases of undercover investigations involving farm animals, more specifically mostly chickens and eggs.  The conditions found on some farms have been horrid, some farms having in excess of 800,000 chickens with corpses inside the cages of grouped birds.  Mostly in Maryland and Washington, D.C. areas the COK is responsible for rescue thousands of farm animals from cruel and inhumane conditions.  In early 2006 an investigation conducted by the COK found that a Pennsylvania egg farm was housing hens that were impaled by cage wires among other decomposing hens in the coupe.  35 counts of animal cruelty were charged against the owner and manager of the farm after a local animal control officer viewed a video provided by the COK which showed the cruel living conditions within this farm.  This case was the first of its kind proving that the COK's undercover investigations could be extremely useful.  The COK is dedicated to converting people into a vegan lifestyle in which animals are not consumed, their funds are mainly derived from charitable contributions which constituted 77.5% of their $520,531 in revenue in 2007.  Only 6% came from grants, and 1% from Merchandise sales, with another 15.5% in miscellaneous funds.  Their expenses totaled $575,954 in 2007 with 63% of those funds deidicated to vegetarian outreach, 14.5% to legal advocacy, 10% to management and general funds, 7% to investigations, 5% to publications, and .5% in membership development.  I think that this organization has been extremely effective in the outcomes of their cases.  Many of their undercover investigations have resulted in the rescuing of animals as well as the sanctioning of the persons responsible.  They are trying to reach the middle age working adult, this can be determined mostly from their dunkin cruelty campaign.  Many middle age adults consume dunkin donuts coffee every day, making a campaign against dunkin donuts is a great way to target this audience.

Vegan Outreach is a national group that attempts to help save the lives of farmed animals and reduce their pain and suffering by sharing information. Though their aim is to reach a broader audience by providing free literature, their target audience is the vegan public. They rely on vegans and other animal advocates to spread the word about their organization to non-vegans. They also have a College Program that targets students in the hopes that they will start advocacy groups on campuses.
Vegan Outreach is a non-profit that is mostly funded by donations from supporters. When sending out newsletters to subscribers, they always send a blurb about the need for donations in order to produce more materials and to educate more of the public. The group focuses on the issue of cruelty-free eating and living by sharing information on the negative effects of eating and using animals and the benefits of a vegan lifestyle. They use leafleting as their main way of gaining support and sending out information. They send free pamphlets and other materials to volunteers around the US and send out a weekly newsletter highlighting notable advocates who have done an extraordinary amount of leafleting.
Vegan Outreach is effective not because of the organization itself, but because of the people who support it. Without volunteers to spread the information that Vegan Outreach provides, then there would be no organization. It has a positive influence over a large community of vegans, but its influence over the general public varies based on several factors. The overall effectiveness of the NGO does not only depend on the way in which its leaflets present information, but the way in which advocates present themselves to the public while attempting to share this information.

http://www.friendsofanimals.org/index.html  Jennifer Hader

Friends of Animals work to free animals from cruelty and institutionalized exploitation around the world.  They want animals and humans to live together in harmony and respect.  All their services and projects are supported financially through membership contributions and grants.  FOA relies solely are donations from donors and members.  They have been successful in their endeavors since established in 1957.  According to their official website they have continued to support more animal’s years each then any other animal advocacy group of their kind.  They want pet owners and lovers to understand the harmful ways in which animals are being used in society.  They advocate spay/neutering animals and offer locations on their websites that they have partnered with to give such procedures at lower costs.  They advocate for all animals in the world because they do not have a voice of their own to protect themselves from the injustices that many people put them through.  FOA has worked with legislation to look for alternatives to animal testing to preserve and protect wild animals.  I believe that they have been effective seeing as how since 1957 they have facilitated over two million spay/neuter procedures.  They have expanded their advocacy from originally concerning themselves on spay/neuter procedures to animal’s welfare in general.  They continue to educate the public through their work and are involved in a multitude of programs all over the globe.

http://www.ifaw.org/ifaw_united_states/index.php Alicia Robillon  The non-governmental organization that I chose is the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). The organization started with a group of local citizens in Canada who coordinated to end the relentless and brutal slaughtering of white coat harp seals on the eastern coast of Canada by gaining international support to make it illegal. These founders “rejected the notion that the interests of humans and animals were separate. Instead they embraced the understanding that the fate and future of harp seals-and all other animals on Earth-are inextricably linked to our own.” They are now in their fourth decade of existence and have 1.2 million supporters worldwide. As well as rallying the people of different countries, they seek to “engage communities, government leaders and like-minded organizations…and achieve long lasting solutions to pressing animal welfare and conservation challenges-that benefit both animals and people.” (www.ifaw.org) Their core subjects are all animals that need their assistance and they have been involved in, and are currently involved in, numerous different campaigns around the world. Some of their current campaigns include, Emergency Relief (save animals struck by disaster such as oil spills, beached whales and natural disasters), Protecting Whales Around the World, Save the World’s Remaining Elephants, Fight Illegal Wildlife Trade, Help Dogs and Cats, End the Seal Hunt, Education: United States (educate the public on animals and conservation) and, more broadly, National and Regional Efforts in the United States (when you first enter their homepage, they let you pick your country and I chose the U.S.—so there would be different campaigns for different countries).  Most of their efforts center on involving and persuading government leaders and corporations to change their policies in order to help wildlife and animals. They use their newsletter, donations, employees, volunteers, petitions, and people power in order to accomplish their goals. According to the Cape Cod Times on May 9, 2009, IFAW was forced to, “cut the organization's operations budget from $53.6 million to $36.1 million…and attributed the budget shortfalls to ‘financial and operational circumstances.’” (http://www.capecodonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090509/BIZ/905090312)  Most of their money is received through gifts, donations and charity events, since they are a certified charity under the Better Business Bureau (BBB). I think that they are an effective organization, given that they are one of the largest animal NGO and that they are based in 17 countries, on all continents except Antarctica. I like that they seek to contact government leaders and corporations because they are the ones that would have the power to change the current policies in their respective countries. I also like the fact that they do not seem to be an extremely radical group, such as what PETA might be considered, and want to create harmony between animals and people instead of choosing one side or the other. People will be more apt to join an organization that looks to benefit both humans and animals equally and create solutions that harmonize the two. Overall, I am quite impressed by this organization and would even consider getting involved with them myself.
http://www.wspa-international.org/ Matt O'Donnell  The non-governmental organization that I chose is the World Society for the Protection of Animals.  Their target audience is all ages, they have 900 member organizations in over 150 countries.  They have 13 offices worldwide and hundreds of thousands of supporters.  Some of their core subjects include bears, dogs, saving orangutans, factory farming, working horses, whaling, disaster management, education, and bullfighting.  Their vision is a world where animal welfare matters to the majority of the poulation and animal cruelty comes to an end.  The tactics that they use are rescuing animals, campaigns, letters, media and using legislation to pass laws wordlwide.  Their budget is comes from thousands of supporters who join and donate and they have famous people such as Simon Cowell as a spokesperson.  Yes I do think that they are an effective organization because of the support they recieve and some of the things they have done in the past.  In they year 2009 alone they stopped 44 of 56 planned bear baiting, trained 340 teachers in animal welfare in several countries, and for the first time ever they released 9 endangered bonobos into the wild.

I have chosen to write about the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). The ASPCA  provides educational resources on pet care and rescues animals that are at risk or have been victimized by animal cruelty.  This organization also provides  medical care and other rehabilitation services to its rescues. I believe the ASPCA's audience are people that have pets and people that have a soft spot for animals. The ASPCA makes most of its money from donations, charitable walks, and their involovement in cable television programs like "Animal Precinct" shown on Animal Planet. This organization uses non-violent methods to reach its audience. The ASPCA uses commericals that are broadcasted on television and the internet to share their messages. These commercials are often graphic and emotional to the viewer. I personally have to change the channel when I see these commericials. They make me want to cry. I  can't believe what some people do their animals.

I could not find exact information on the ASPCA's yearly budget. The estimates that I have read place the ASPCA's budget to about 60 million per year. I believe this organization is both effective and sucessful. One indicator is their large budget. I think the ASPCA has made people more aware of what animal cruelty is, how to spot it, and the legal effects of such horrific actions. I just wish the ASPCA would expand their focus by including more on farm and labatory animals.

http://www.idausa.org/about.html  Jeffrey Nieves

For my non-governmental organization, I chose to research IDA or "In Defense of Animals"  This NGO was founded by Dr Elliot Katz in 1983 in San Rafael, California.  The IDA organization has an annual budget of $650,000 taking in donations from its 60,000 members.  Their mission statement reads; "Our mission is to end animal exploitation, cruelty, and abuse by protecting and advocating for the rights, welfare, and habitats of animals, as well as to raise their status beyond mere property, commodities, or things." (www.idausa.org) The group has become widely known for its efforts to stop scientists and labs from experimenting on animals.  Some of their most recent victories have been saving two very sick and abused elephants from a circus in Asia.  The IDA has also managed to bring public sctrutiny to the mistreatment of chimpanzees in Cameroon as well as the killing of dolphins in Japan.  Moreover this group fights internationally to protect all animals from experiments, mistreatment, abuse, being skinned for fur, puppy mills, factory farming, and meat industries.  The IDA has proven to be a very effective organization.  They have accomplished many victories concerning the protection of animals and continue to work valiantly to get there message across.  Though the group has only been around for 30 years they have gained a massive amount of support through their members.  They have many volunteers and receive donations from different places all over the world.  The IDA will only grow larger and be more effective in the protection of animal rights as years go on.

I’m writing about the WWF or world wildlife, and their goal is help preserve nature and all of the animals that reside on this planet. The WWF’s goal is to help inform people so that they preserve natural areas, and allow animals to flourish. Another major goal of the WWF is to help endangered species, because they are on the brink of extinction, and need to be preserved so that they can flourish in the future. The areas that the animals live in is a necessity to their well being and the WWF tries to ensure that their natural habitats will not be destroyed now or in the future. The wildlife must be preserved and the WWF uses many methods to inform the people that any volunteers or money can help the animals that we know and love.

http://www.awf.org  Samantha Ruminski

The NGO that I chose was the African Wildlife Foundation, they only focus on the welfare of areas in mostly southern Africa, including countries such as Zambia Botswana and Nambia. The organization works with about six other countries as well. The AWF aims there attention towards Africa's wildlife and its native people. One of the big ideas that AWF's website talks about is empowering its local people, the believe that people who can be protect the wildlife in Africa is the people who are constantly surrounded by it. This organizations provides education and training to conservation professionals, who have aided in the protection of animals such as the elephant and lion. To make money the collect donations as well as sell hand made african objects on their website. It seems that this organization is very successful because they have been around since 1961 when it went by the name of the African Wildlife Leadership Foundation.

http://www.abcbirds.org/newsandreports/releases/100914.html  Arian Alicea  This article is about the American Bird Conservancy (ABC). They are currently working to save the Palilu bird native to the Hawaiian Islands. I chose this article because it shows how NGOs, even though they are "non-governmental", can still work together with the government to achieve their goals. ABC is a non-profit organization that has been around since 1994. They are the only organization that deals exclusively with birds. Because of this, they are much more focused when a bird is in trouble, as is the Palilu in Hawaii.

The audience of The World Animal Foundation is anywhere from a young adult to adult. The core subjects this NGO focuses on are wildlife, farm animals, and shelter animals, largely animals that were victims of abuse. The tactic they use is to inform, but not guilt. Their articles are full of information, but it is not presented in a manner that guilts their audience to donate or support them. This appears to be a fairly widespread NGO, since there is an international branch. Their website is free of ads, so in order to run a website without the support of ads, this NGO must be doing fairly well. They work with other non profit organizations to gain popularity and funding. They sell merchandise as well. This appears to be a fairly effective organization due to their no guilt tactic. People tend to shy away from an organization that tells them they are doing everything wrong and they are bad people, but this approach attracts people and says simply, "this is how you can help".

http://www.spana.org/the-big-picture/animal-cruelty-and-tradition.html?gclid=CM_QkqbgiqQCFdJL5QodLCmOLA   Kristina Wiltjer  The origination I found is SPANA which stands for “Society for the Protection of animal aboard”. This origination mostly deals with labor animals such as a donkeys, or horses. SPANA is trying to put a stop to animal abuse in Africa and the Middle East. When looking at one of the picture you could see that these animals were left in their working gear to long which ripped into their skin and that by putting battery acid on the wounds it would dry it out and heal it quicker. This origination allows people to be educated on how to treat their labor animal without abusing them, and showing them as well, how to take proper care when their hurt.

http://www.upc-online.org/  Asma Hussin  United Poulty Front is a national animal rights organization working to address the concerns surrounding the treatment of "domestic fowl" (i.e. chickens, turkeys, ducks) "in food production, science, education, entertainment, and human companionship situations", It was founded by the writer and activist, Karen Davis., They work to promote a vegan diet and vegans are their target audience, The goal of the UPC is to promote public awareness regarding the treatment of domestic fowl. This organization focuses on domestic fowl because "they are the largest number of abused warm-blooded animals in the world." (upc-online) They conduct investigations in order to inform the public with news regarding the treatment of domestic fowls. The methods used in these investigations include "publics talks, writings, mailings, conferences, infotmation displays, and film presentations". I would think they are relatively successful as an organization, as they are "the only organization in the country and possibly the world exclusively" that focuses on the plight of domestic fowl.

The Rainforest Action Network, or RAN, works to preserve rain forests again logging. It was founded in California in 1985. They are supported by donations and are part of a larger network of NGOs working to preserve local biodiversity in many areas around the world. They try to spread their message to a wide audience by educating people, using direct action, and attracting media attention to their causes. My research found that about 80% of the money the organization makes goes to its cause. I think institutes like the RAN can be effective in educating people and shifting public opinion on environmental causes in order to make real progress in saving wildlife.

The ASPCA is an organization dedicated to the prevention of animal cruelty. In addition to fighting animal cruelty, they also aim to stop unnecessary euthanasia and promote adoption. They are a non-profit organization that thrives through donations. They use nonviolent tactics but have the authority to investigate and make arrests in animal cruelty cases. They are extremely effective and have a wide audience, which is reached in several ways including shelters/adoption centers, fundraisers and ‘animal rescue’ reality TV shows.

The Great Ape Project is a non-governmental organization that was started in 1994. I choose this NGO because it was the first one I came across during my such that seems to focus on one particular type of animal (since then I’ve come across others like “Save a Goat”). It main purpose is to guarantee, non-human great apes (chimpanzees, baboons, gorillas etc.) the same basic rights as human. While I’m not sure I completely agree with them, the organization purposes that the mistreatment of these ‘great’ apes is pretty much the same as slavery due to the genetic similarities between primates (great apes) and humans.  The ideals of the GAP are based off ideas that were first published a book with the same name. The authors Paola Cavalieri and Peter Singer as well as other specialists in the subject like Jane Goodall compare human characteristics to those of great primates. Arguing to many of the traits we consider primary characteristics of humanity, can also be found in the great apes. The GAP has several chapters around the world, but the first chapter was started in Brazil back in 1994. It seems to be the main chapter of the organization.

The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) is an NGO that’s goal is to help and inspire Americans to care about and protect our forests and wildlife.  It’s the nations largest conservation organization and they take on issues ranging from the environment and global warming to invasive or endangered species.  They take donations, and accept volunteers very readily.

http://www.farmsanctuary.org/index.html   Sarah Chaulk

The Farm Sanctuary is an animal protection organization. It is located in Watkins Glen, New York and has a second farm in California. They are responsible for passing legislation for humane farm conditions in California, Arizona, and Florida. They have also worked to ban force feeding geese to make foie gras. They have 2 rehabilitation shelters for farm animals, one located in Watkins Glen, New York and one in Orland, California. They also sponsor an “adopt a farm animal program” where you can sponsor an animal in the sanctuary.

Most of their funds come from donations and volunteers giving time working on the farms. The farm does not condone theft of animals but will take animals out of bad situations in necessary. I think they’re targeted at people who are compassionate toward animals and probably don’t eat meat. They are working toward a better future for farm animals. I think they’re a very effective organization. Legislation is hard to pass but they are working as hard as they can to give animals fair living conditions. And their farms are outstanding.

http://www.humanestrategies.org/index.html Linda Pham  The NGO that I chose was the Humane Strategies. Here, the goal is to save the lives of the animals. At Humane Strategies, they try to increase adoption rates and improve shelter conditions. As a result, they are constantly discussing on how to meet their goals of improvements as well as doing fundraisers. They get most of their money through fundraisers as well as donations. Along with this, they have a program called Rescue Waggin'. It is a program that helps transports dogs from their current shelters where they have little chance of finding a home to different shelters that can help these dogs be adopted into a loving home. They currently have 4 Rescue Waggin' programs.
http://www.arfindia.org/index.php Maghda Amrani  Animal Rights Fund is a NGO in India. Its main focuses are providing vaccinations for animals that may need it, promoting veganism in order to stop the slaughter of animals, and they create awareness by educating various communities in animal welfare. This is a positive step in a country where animal welfare is not key. In most third world countries, due to economic stress and the many issues that arise from that, animal education and welfare seem to take a back seat. They actually do not provide shelters, espcially for cows, i the belief it is not natural and do not see it as a solution for animals. They have anoher approach, which is mainly educating the community on how to harmlessly live with animals.
http://www.dnaindia.com/mumbai/report_attacks-on-animals-ngo-offers-reward-for-information_1404994 Matthew Flynn  PAWS is a non governmental organization that rehabilitaes injured and orphaned wildlife.  Most of their focus with animals is through sheltering and adopting dogs and cats.  PAWS also tries to educate communties on how they can help animals.  This article shows that PAWS was offering a reward for information regarding attacks on dogs and cats.  This is the second time they have done this and shows that PAWS truely cares in making a difference with every situation they encounter.
http://www.africanconservation.org/2007092023/about-acf/about-acf.html   Heather McAtamney
I choose the African Conservation Foundation. This non governmental group strives to protect and preserve the land as well as the animals. Some of their projects include reforestation and chimpanzee conservation.  The organization reaches out to children, and adults, in schools to try to educate them about the importance of  the environment and animals. It appears that the main source of funds are made through donation and charity support. I found this to be a different organization because it does not just focus on the well being and survival of the animals, but also on  the condition of the environment where they live.

http://www.allanimals.org/   Dan Bauer

AFA, Alliance for animals, is a nonprofit organization that believes all animals, human and non human should not be property of one another. They promote veganism which is not just a diet to them, it is a commitment. Support the moral and ethical treatment of animals and bring attention to the public situations of animal abuse. Strong advocates for nonviolence AFA makes sure all information they present is accurate. Volunteers, donors, and members are what run this company efficiently besides the one part time employee they have. They have many events set up on their website proving that they are effective and progressing in their motives. The events are mostly promoting veganism. I believe that promoting veganism is an important and effective way of promoting the moral treatment and equal view of animals.

Greenpeace is an NGO that is created to create a green and peaceful future. It has 2.8 million supporters. They use lobbying to achieve it's goals. It is the most well known environmental organization in the world. They do things such as help clean up oil spills. Other issues they focus on is whaling, overfishing, and deforestation. It is a global organization and well known on almost all continents.

WHO is an organization that is trying to stop the overhunting of whales across the world. They are focusing on the many asian countries that eat it regularly, with there approach being not to save the whales, but the whale meat is actually very bad for you as it has an extremely high concentration of mercury. They are trying to get the whalers if they are going to hunt to go after the smaller animals because the higher up the food chain you go the more mercury you accumulate.
http://www.sarconline.co.uk/   Nick Bouchard

The NGO that I choose to look at in particular is the Southern Animal Rights Coalition (SARC) which is an organization that works mostly out of southern England in counties such as Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Hampshire, Somerset, West Sussex and Wiltshire. SARC's audience is mostly to those living in the United Kingdom, however it is clear that their message covers the entire globe and not just where they are located. Their core ideals are based on giving animals of all shapes and sizes a life based on their common needs and giving them consideration as to what is in their best interests. Some tactics they use are basically considered against the law, as most of the time if they cannot persuade groups to relinquish the animals they believe are being mistreated, they will trespass on private property and actually “save” the animal. They are concerned mostly with those animals that are being exploited for food, laboratory experiments, and entertainment. This group is clearly sponsored by private donations as well as from the public, as on their site they have a tab which allows anyone to donate money to them. Clearly they are an effective organization, for example in 2007 SARC “saved” several goats in which the Ministry of Defense of England were testing in different diving missions. Then the next year, the English government had stopped this practice although they stated those experiments were “necessary”, which in itself is a bit alarming.

I chose to do Animal Liberation Front.  They are an NGO active mostly in the U.S, Canada and I think have reached into Mexico as well. I chose this link because there was a lot of news about them in the recent years. Before reading the rest of this, check out their page. I'm interested to know what people thought about it. Much like the link to Steve Best's interview on the front page, these guys take a very radical approach. Like most movements, there is always a direct action segment, and that's these guys. They will use the direct action approach to saving and freeing abused and endangered animals.

After checking out their site, look at the second link I posted. This is what the radical right says about their organization. On a technical level, it's just a bastardization of the term "terrorism." Paradoxically, their tactics aren't legal, but are they violent? Does property destruction connote violence and therefor is the word "Terrorist" appropriate? When I say property destruction, don't get me wrong: we are talking about millions of dollars in damage. However, we are also talking about the lives of hundreds of animals. Further, Rolling Stone wrote a great article about their sister organization ELF burning down a ski resort that was built quasi-legally over preservation land. So, again, is this indeed terrorism?

Particularly, I think some media conglomerates can be considered culpable in as a Political Action Committee and therefor, as a marketing agent for right wing NGO's. I say this because in the second article, they are lambasting a report saying that soldiers returning from Iraq are targets for right wing "extremist" recruiting. It's not that what bothers me about the article. What bothers me is the difference in language they use for the right and left. It seems like they are more upset for suggesting the extremist right wing could engage in terrorism, while gracefully glossing over the fact that McVeigh was a right wing terrorist who killed over a hundred people. Further, only mentioning that the anti-abortion activists protest and never mentioning that they have shot and killed doctors. That said, the article finishes by re-affirming where the word terrorist belongs in a domestic setting: attached to the left wing "eco-terrorists," like ELF and ALF (who have never killed or physically harmed a person).

www.grey2kusa.org  John Kane  The NPO I am writing about is Grey2k USA, an organization founded to eliminate dog racing tracks and the cruel treatments of the dogs used. The dogs subjected to racing live in poor conditions. The racing itself places serious injuries on some dogs, and when the dogs can no longer race, they are no longer profitable. They may be killed as well because of this. Fed terrible quality food as well, no dog subjected to racing is going to live a well and healthy life. This NPO works to raise awareness for this situation and shut down dog tracks. Their main focus is to provide humane treatment for the animals subjected to this life, and eliminate racing nationally. Based in Somerville, MA they have shut down 16 tracks to date.
